It all began in 1224 for this magnificent medieval building. In its time this wonderful building was the principal church of the bishops of Moray. In 1270 there had been a fire at the church which was then renovated and expanded. The Cathedral carries so much evidence of it's history. Sadly having come under attack in 1390 by the Earl of Buchan and again in 1402 by Alexander the lord of the Isles, then losing its' roof after the reformation, leading to the collapse of the central tower in 1711. this beautiful building had suffered at many hands and it became neglected.
That is in 1807 When John Shanks a drouthy cobbler (thirsty) became its keeper. IN 1820's one of the Duties of John Shank was to become a guide the visitors, as the Cathedral was to be repaired and stabilised and made into an attraction. there is so much more about Elgins wonderful Cathedral and the events that are held there throughout the year on its own website.

You have the neighbouring towns with thier own local facilities but along the Sprey way which is 65 miles form Aviemore, known for its skiing, the route follows the River Sprey into the Sprey Bay onto the small town of Aberlour then onto Granton on Sprey.
