What a fabulous opportunity to get married in one of the most famous icons in Scotland the Eilean Donan Castle and then stay close by in a newly refurbished cottage surrounded with the most breath taking views. Inspired to write about this little hideaway after seeing the beautiful images displayed on facebook about the castle and the self catering cottage nearby.
Eilean Donan simply means island of Donnanin. this small tidal island sits on a pint where three lochs meet in the western highlands of Scotland. That instant feel of freedom and fresh air will dust the cobwebs off from your every day living.
The history of the castle itself has the most colourful and interesting of background. built around the 13th century this magnificent icon of Scotland was reigned over by Alexandra II who ruled between 1214- 1249. As the castle stood enclosing much of the island where the three lochs meet, The Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Aish, the castle was a boundry of the Norse Celtic Lordship of the Isles and the Earldom of Ross. Even the names give a picture of grandeur provided a stronghold against Norway.

This wonderful icon of Scotland had a recorded population of 1 person in 2011. the Castle is amongst the most interesting of history to be told, with many feuding clans and is of no wonder that this picturresque Castle has been chosen to appear in films and television as well as frequent appearances in photos. when it comes to Scotlands and Englands castles, churches and cathedrals there has to surely a genuine interest in all thier beauty and what they stood for and still do to this day. Impregnated by history. For the Eilean Donan Castle the Jacobite uprisings between 1688 and 1746 lead to its destruction, for almost 200 years until the 20th century reconstruction brought back to life the Castle but not for war.
Many of It's original features lost, and althoe the rebuild followed the ground plan it resulted in a difference of appearance to it's magnificent self as the survey drawings by Lewis Petit were undiscovered until the restoration was nearing it's completion. today a tourist attraction.
